The history of the castle of the counts of Flanders reads a bit like a short history of Flanders, with glorious periods and moments of crisis. The castle was once the favorite residence of the counts of Flanders and grew with the increasing power of its owners. But it was also the scene of the crises that Flanders experienced, for example when the Gentenaars attacked the castle in an attempt to limit the power of the count.
